An Introduction to Shrink Wrapping Covering Applications as Well as Materials and Machinery

Shrink wrapping is a particularly well-established form of packaging that has developed over the past four to five decades.

Essentially, material is produced such that molecules are stretched as part of the manufacturing process. When this material is subjected to heat, the elastic memory of the plastic is activated, causing the material to shrink around the product.

This is a traditional division between packaging for transit and packaging for display, whilst the latter has a further division into food and non-food applications.

The key to the application of shrink wrap for transit is cost so that the material and its application provide the lowest cost solution in delivering the product from the manufacturer to the end user.

The conventional definition of a transit wrap involves the use of a sleeve sealer and polyethylene film. An individual or bundled wrap provides the necessary solution of achieving the shipment at the lowest cost.

A typical wrap offers two open sides as a consequence of the use of a sleeve although in certain applications the sleeve may be effectively eliminated by the use of appropriate machinery. Generally, the latter is not a particular requirement.

Polyethylene has the attributes of strength at a certain thickness together with shrink ratios and slip. Accordingly, a user will be able to specify a thickness to provide the necessary pack integrity to the end user and shrink ratios to ensure that the wrap is tight. Slip can be altered to ensure that packs stack appropriately.

There are further benefits of shrink wrap since waste disposal after delivery is relatively insignificant whilst the material has clarity to allow product to be identified. In addition, there are tamper-evidence and moisture-prevention benefits depending on the exact application.

Normal applications involve the collation of products although individual packs are readily benefited from transit wrapping.

The market also offers developments in this area such as coloured and printed films. Polyethylene is not a particularly good medium for product enhancement through printing or pigmentation as it has a naturally soft surface which allows scuffing and dust retention whilst it is also relatively cloudy.

However, polyethylene may frequently offer sufficient optics so that it is acceptable in these applications.

As technology has advanced in this market so have applications crossed over traditional definitions in certain areas.

Consequently, certain transit packs are found using normal display films where the pack and its marketing benefit from the increased investment in a material that offers better optics and machineability.

There are highly specialised display films that are designed to offer the same strength as polyethylene but with far better optics and the marketing benefit is such, in these very specific areas, that the greater film cost can be justified.

Display shrink wrap is traditionally oriented towards non-food point of sale packaging where the principal goal is product enhancement with some limited pack protection through an overall wrap.

The latter is the main distinguishing feature of display packaging, the partial wrap with a sleeve generally found is replaced with a total wrap involving the creation of a two dimensional bag around the product.

Some years ago, the conventional film used for this purpose was PVC – polyvinylchloride with plasticiser; an amorphous crystalline structure.

PVC has largely been replaced by polyolefin shrink film although PVC continues to be offered.

PVC has particular benefits in that it is the easiest of any films to seal and shrink but it suffers from problems on sealing, whilst it also has strength and storage issues.

PVC’s sealing temperature is very close to its degradation temperature at which a number of by-products are created. These include very small quantities of hydrogen chloride gas and carbon deposits on the sealer.

The HCL may be dealt with through ventilation. It is to be stressed that all materials should be used with regard to good manufacturing practice and as a consequence, polyolefin films will also require ventilation in the same way. The by-products of combustion should always be considered in relation to the use of any specific machine operator.

Carbon deposits require regular cleaning whilst the presence of HCL will give rise to a need for regular maintenance of the sealer. As polyolefin’s have no chlorine, this does not arise with their use.

The plasticiser in PVC will harden in cold conditions and soften in hot conditions and this may well cause strength problems in cold weather and equally machineability problems in hot. Again, as polyolefin material has no plasticiser, these are not issues where this film is concerned.

PVC requires storage at normal room temperature failing which it is likely to start to shrink. Polyolefin will tolerate higher storage temperatures.

The overall machineability of PVC still gives this material some market share but, increasingly, polyolefin has dealt with its lower overall machineability whilst offering the benefits noted above so that it is now by some considerable margin, the principal display material.

Display wrapping involves the creation of a two dimensional bag around the product.

This is conventionally performed using an L Sealer with centre folded film. The sealer allows continuous production of wrapped packs that are then processed through a shrink tunnel.

L sealers are found in a variety of forms – manual, semi and fully automatic. A large part of the manual and semi automatic market has been taken by combined seal and shrink machinery. These machines are commonly referred to as chamber machines.

Fully automatic L sealers have found increasing use as their cost and versatility have improved.

The highest output speeds are offered by flow wrappers using side seal or overlap mechanisms. Nevertheless the common feature of a two dimensional bag remains the principal similarity between all these sealers.

Polyolefin films offer a variety of attributes so that a very large range of applications can be made.

In general, these are not found in food applications although once more, definitions continue to be stretched. Polyolefin is quite well used in certain applications notably pizza and egg wrapping as well as produce packaging. However, a more precise definition might be that polyolefin is not used to extend the shelf life of a food product. This applies generally except where shrink barrier film is used although this latter product is particularly specialised.

Normally, other materials than shrink are used to extend shelf life and as a consequence, shrink is found only in certain food applications although volumes can be significant.

Display applications for polyolefin have almost no limits as materials have been engineered to deal with any given requirement.

Soft shrink as well as perforation and printing are standard offers. At a more specialised level, slip and anti-fog treatments are also available.

There are a few notable ranges of polyolefin shrink film that offer better machineability and performance than the majority of the market and these are particularly distinguished by technical differentiation in manufacturing. These lead to irradiated grades which offer enhanced strength and multi-layer complexes that may be tailored to a particular requirement.

Polyolefin manufacture typically uses three or five layer extrusion and this confers performance benefits as a consequence.

It will be noted that the key to market movement is the development of material to address specific requirements, since its application is relatively uncomplicated.

There is no doubt that polyolefin shrink film will continue to develop so that it addresses even more uses than at present.

Plastic Bag Manufacturers

Plastic bags are used for a variety of purposes. There is currently no industry that does not use plastic bags at one stage or another in the production of their items, be it be in the final stages of packaging or during advertising the product through free attractive customized plastic bags.

Plastic bag manufacturers strive to make a place in the market by providing some excellent quality plastic bags in various designs and models. These are highly durable, resealable, reusable, and have other such excellent qualities to attract customers.

Manufacturers ensure that all the plastic bags undergo a quality check before being sent to the retailer or the wholesaler. The bags must be leak proof and must be temperature tested before getting out of the manufacturing company. Many manufacturers also make sure that the company logos are not faded.

Three major manufacturing companies that do the majority business in the plastic bag industry are the Ziploc, Hefty, and Glad. These companies produce plastic bags in all the conceivable sizes, shapes, and designs to suit the purposes of practically every industry using plastic bags.

Garbage bags are another commodity that needs to be produced in bulk since they are used daily. Litterbags and garbage bags come in large and extra large sizes for special purposes. Manufacturers now produce tie-on garbage bags and litter and garbage bags with handles for easier handling. Though most of the companies name their own brand of garbage bags, many are reigning in this industry with the standard and large size garbage bags with little alterations done to them.

Manufacturers that cater to shops are producing knapsack kinds of carry bags and other fashionable kinds of bags to beat the same old model of plain white carry bags with the handles on the top.

Manufacturers are definitely making an effort to produce different kinds of plastic bags to ensure the customers do not lose interest in the plastic bags and go back to old paper bags.

Standing Out From The Crowd By Using Colour In Your Packaging

How does a small company or individual eBay seller who wants to get big one day do it? The answer is easy - they work hard to stand out from an already crowded field to have their product, service and name recognized before the others.

This can be acheived several ways:

First, is to simply have a better product than your competition does.

Next, is to do it better and faster than the other guy.

Yet another way to separate yourself from the crowd is to deliver your merchandise in a way that stands out and is remembered by the receiver.

An example of this might be who's box of widgets is more likely to be remembered first at re-order time, the one that arrives in a plain brown box with clear tape or the one that arrives in a white box sealed with red, blue, green or yellow tape? Obviously the white box will be remembered because it is different from the rest and provided the net cost to the customer is relatively close, chances are the better remembered package and company will come to mind first therefore getting the next order.

When it comes to gaining repeat customers, it's not always the best price that brings people back for more. You may charge a little more, but if your overall service is superior and you get name and/or product recognition, you will get quality customers coming back as oppossed to the ones only looking for the rock bottom price and who tend to complain the most as well.

If your selling over the web, the first "hands on" impression your customer gets is when the order is delivered. That's where the the first impression truly takes place. If the package arrives looking right, it extends an aire of quality, professionalism and attention to detail that leaves an indelible mental impression on the customer regardless how ordinary the product might be.

Once you have the customers attention when the package arrives, they can't help but open yours first to reveal its contents. The customer never expected such an eye catching package usually get fixated on it and just have to open it. In doing so not only is the packaging remembered, but so is your name. Chances are good that your name will come up in conversation as well and possibly generate more business.

Depending on your particular market, further lasting impressions can be made inside the package as well. Matching or contrasting color tissue paper can highlight the item as can packing peanuts. Instead of white, pink or green alone, you can mix pink and green together for a different look.

If your products are shipped in cardboard tubes such as posters, artwork, blueprints or fabric, a great impact can be made with colored tubes instead of plain kraft for little extra expense.

It goes without saying that no matter how colorful and impressive your packaging may be, it means nothing it is not packaged properly to arrive in one piece.

No matter who the carrier is, UPS, FexEx, USPS, etc., you can be sure that your packages will ride a myriad of conveyor belts, get tossed around some and will fall down at least one mail chute along the way. You can also rest assured that in all likelyhood, the "Handle With Care" label won't make a bit of difference to a package sorter if it is even noticed at all.

With said, you need to pay attention to what is in the inside of the package as well as the outside. Be sure to package things with the above paragraph in mind. Bubble Wrap, loose fill peanuts, tissue paper, foam, and the other various types of inner protection that are available make it easy to do a good job and get the customers order delivered in one piece.

A stand out splash of color will get you and your product remembered and proper packaging will get it there safely so everyone is happy at the end of the day.

Outsourcing Your Packaging Is A Strategic Option

In a recent article in "Investors Business Daily", it was revealed that outsourcing has become more than just an easy way to cut costs. It has become a strategic tool that gives businesses flexibility and access to skilled personnel.

Since the advent of the Internet, and the rush to get online, companies have turned to outside professionals for services and solutions. Hiring a full-time IT technician is costly and not an efficient use of resources. Outsourcing allows companies to focus on their core businesses while gaining access to skilled labor when they need it.

* Outsourcing is a way to boost revenue
* Outsourcing is a way to cut costs
* Outsourcing eases labor shortages
* Outsourcing cuts payroll costs
* Outsourcing allows companies to focus on core competencies
* Outsourcing reduces or eliminates some capital expenditures

Outsourcing also allows businesses to change their corporate culture. If companies have renegade groups that are costly, ineffective, or difficult to manage, that group can be outsourced. This enables employers to change their workplace environment on-the-fly.

Still, most companies outsource projects in order to reduce costs and to gain outside expertise. A survey by "The Conference Board" indicated the following "Top-10" outsourcing objectives (numbers are approximate):

* Reduce Costs (40%)
* Access to Expertise (38%)
* Improve Internal Service (37%)
* Focus on Core Business (34%)
* Maximize Resources (27%)
* Internal Flexibility (25%)
* Improve External Service (24%)
* Changing Customer Needs (20%)
* World Class Standards (15%)
* Continuous Improvement (15%)

When deciding to outsource your packaging, the real litmus test is whether outsourcing adds value. Does it really reduce costs? Is the investment in in-house training and machinery too great? Does outsourcing a service give you access to people with greater skill sets or companies with more resources available to them?

Bottom line: outsourcing your packaging service needs is about more than just saving money. It is a strategic option for savvy businesses and entrepreneurs.

13 Packaging Trends That Will Make Consumers Buy In 2006

The packaging industry remains in a state of flux with mergers, acquisitions and buyouts every week. Yet, new products and new players appear every day. Despite it all, packaging is virtually recession proof. Simply put, a product needs a package to sell it, so where would we be without it? Here are some important packaging trends for 06 that cannot be overlooked by anyone who wants their products to sell.

Demographics Rule

If you are not on top of these trends then you had better begin to be. Who buys what is constantly in a state of change. Many marketers think that it is ok to have one universal package that appeals to every one. Wrong. Each target demographic has unique needs. Two very hot packaging demographics include women and boomers.

Note: The first boomer turned 60 years of age on 1/1/06. That means that the largest purchasing demographic can be uniquely identified through product packaging. If you don't know or understand what they want, ask me about my special report Packaging Products for Boomers.

Health Prevails

No matter what age they are, people are genuinely concerned about their health. They are watching what they consume. The better job you do in educating this consumer, the more products you can sell. Consumers will increase their awareness of what goes into the products they use or eat. A knowledgeable consumer will be your best customer and the package its where it all begins.

Big Brother IS Watching You

Yes, shades of 1984. With all the advances in intelligent packaging, product manufacturers really can tell what you buy and where. This is going to increase with the advent of new and innovative smart packaging applications. They ultimate goal will be to track every product from the manufacturer, consumer and disposal. There is quite a bit of interest around the “cradle to grave” concept.

Convenience Is King or Queen

It's all about time or the lack of if. The more you can simplify consumers’ lives the more you will connect. Think of all the packaging categories that have developed around this concept. HMR-Home meal replacement, Grab and Go, and RTE-ready to eat categories all will continue to improve products and increase sales. Life is not getting any simpler for the majority of us so if you can't help through product packaging, step aside because other company’s products will.

One BIG Happy Family

Globalization will continue unabated. Don't just think US consumers. Some of the most intriguing products are not developed in the US. Other innovations will be seen in emerging markets that are not necessarily in NA.

Focus on Functionality

What can you do for me? Tell me why I should buy your product and what benefits I will receive from purchasing it. Don't obfuscate. Seventy percent of purchasing decisions are made in the store in 2.6 seconds. Get to the point and persuade me to buy. Otherwise, I'll spend my shopping dollars on a product that does.

DYI Body and Healthcare

Consumers are taking charge of their own well-being. They evaluate wellness and body care products on the deliverability of benefits. People are reading packages to become well informed about the value of the product.

Green and Greener

The environment is heating up (and I don't mean global warming). Companies are building brands around environmentally friendly products. Think about Wal-Mart and the introduction of corn-based plastics in the produce department. One major shift in consumer acceptance can cause a landslide of new product innovations.

Off the Wall Opportunities

Today's hot category could be tomorrow's loser. Trend tracking is where the latest action comes from. Be sure and seek out the latest trends and how they impact your business. If you are not marketing to women and the 50+ generation, you may be out of business soon.

Product Security Is Paramount

If you cannot prove that, your product is secure and hasn't been tampered with, look out. Just look at some recent examples: poisoned dog food and contaminated milk. Consumers are getting more and more wary of where products come from and how secure they remain though the manufacturing process. Look for many innovations that prevent counterfeiting, tampering, contaminating or any product degradation.

Think Value VS Price

What is this product going to do for me? I'll pay more if it solves a problem. A DuPont-sponsored survey on behalf of Cryovac found that 72 percent of US consumers are willing to pay more for improved food and beverage packaging that guarantees freshness. Wow that can move your product out of the commodity business in a hurry.

Product Saturation And Overkill

As more and more brands develop brand extensions, they are killing the category. Look at the growth of private label. Branded goods are going to have to work harder to capture a consumer’s attention. Advertising alone isn't getting the job done. The demand for private labels will continue to escalate at the expense of branded products.

Niche Me Please

There are lots of new and exciting niche markets just waiting for your products. Don’t overlook opportunities to market to new consumers in unconventional ways. Last but not least don’t overlook the Internet for you products. Remember packaging considerations for marketing online are different from conventional outlets.

So if you want to package products consumers will buy keep the above in mind and: Look outside your industry for innovative packaging ideas. Don't become so “industry” focused that you overlook opportunities in other markets. Get grounded in hot consumer trends. Don't just package hype. Deliver value in the form of benefits consumers will derive from buying your product. Keep current on who is buying what and where and don’t rely on what worked in the past.

Returnable Plastic Packaging 7 Universal Cost Saving Tips

You will find the tips in this first section to be useful in saving money regardless of the specific returnable packaging you decide to use. Keep them in mind throughout your packaging purchases. These tips cover (but aren't limited to) plastic corrugated, thermoformed plastic trays and pallets, and other reusable products

1. Consider using thinner plastic. The chances are good you will save money when you can reduce the thickness, regardless of which Returnable Packaging product you are using. Because of the advances in film structures, in many cases you’ll be able to increase the strength while reducing the thickness.

2. Plan Ahead. Purchasing or committing to take an additional month or two of product will assure that you have product when you need it.

3. Designate a freight carrier if you have an existing relationship with one. Your discounted rate with a carrier (Roadway, CCX, Old Dominion, etc) can have a drastic impact on your bottom line.

4. Ask your supplier to hold inventory for you. This reduces your cost, locks in your pricing (the plastic industry can be volatile), and frees up your storage space.

5. Implement an Automatic Replenishment Program with your supplier. It will make your life and your supplier’s life much easier.

6. Determine a Safety Stock amount for your supplier to keep on hand at all times in case of an emergency. You can identify the correct amount by reviewing your sales activities during the past quarter or year.

7. Rely on your Packaging Professional for help and guidance. They expect you to know your business and realize you may not be as familiar with theirs.

Returnable Plastic Packaging Conclusion:

Returnable plastic packaging includes so many different products. However, with plastic as its main component, these tips can and will help anyone reduce or even eliminate price increases.

Packaging Professionals and the Social Order. Why Members Of Such an Essential Industry Get So Little Respect.

Want to know the level of recognition and respect packaging professionals, like myself, receive? Think about the last cocktail party you attended. The moment of truth comes when that most basic of all class-defining questions is asked. “So what do you do for a living?”

Oh to be able to say doctor, lawyer…even Indian chief. But no. Each time we say the word “packaging” it seems that most party guests side step toward that “must-have” appetizer across the room, or suddenly realize that their drinks need refilling.

And yet we know all too well how essential our role is in society. So who do we have to blame for this lack of esteem? I think a large amount of the responsibility rests on our own shoulders.

Not that we should grab people by the arm and say, “Wait, wait…imagine a world without packaging. What would a Kleenex be without a dispensing carton? How ready would Ready Whip be without the aerosol can?” What would a 6-Pack be without a 6-Pack?”

No, that would only make matters worse. What I am suggesting, however, is a collective look in the mirror, and then a coming together of the disparate forces within our industry that have been fragmented for too many years.

If the general public is to imagine a world without packaging, we have to imagine a packaging world united in its efforts to educate the general public.

Right now in the mind of the average consumer, there is no packaging industry. Many consumers merely believe that the product manufacturer is the one responsible for the product’s packaging. Many simply think of brown bags and boxes when they hear the word “packaging.” Even those with a little more manufacturing worldliness only put us packaging professionals into four major commodity groups: glass, metal, plastics and film.

One problem is the fact that there are no industry giants in packaging that serve to epitomize or represent the industry as a whole. Unlike aerospace, computing or retail, there is no Boeing, or Dell, or Nordstom.

The second major problem contributing to the lack of understanding and respect is the fact that the industry makes no real effort to promote or explain itself. The industry has no single voice.

Sure we have trade associations. Good ones, too. But they each represent different segments of our industry. Instead of one voice, there are competing voices, each with its own message.

Yes, the Consumer Specialty Products Association (CSPA) has really beefed up its image and awareness efforts in the past years, but this association only represents a tiny portion of the packaging industry as a whole. Then there’s the Institute of Packaging Professional (IoPP), the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI), the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the Western Aerosol Information Bureau (WAIB), the Tube Council, the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC), and on and on. Individually they do a great job of supporting membership interests. But when it comes to the image of the entire industry, it can be argued that the individualized messages do more harm than good.

It’s not too far flung to compare our image dilemma with that of the boxing world. For better or worse, competing sanctioning bodies have just about dealt the boxing industry a self-inflicted knock out. Instead of one heavy weight champion, there’s one for every organization.

Our problem is not one of self-destruction, however. It’s just a matter of respect, and yes, ego. More than anything else, it’s a matter of pride.

The truth is, I am very, very proud of “what I do for a living.” And most of my friends and associates in this industry are equally proud. That’s one reason why I still go to cocktail parties whenever the opportunity presents itself, and still look people right in the eye when I answer that self-defining question.

So let us imagine for a moment a world in which packaging has one voice. It is possible, you know. All it would take is the coming together of our current industry factions, with a single-minded purpose. And it will happen some day. It’s simply up to you and me to make it happen sooner rather than later.
